Louder Than You Think

Live music events mean long days of loud sets, and it's easy to lose track of just how loud those sets really are.

Hearing damage can begin around 85 dB — roughly the level of heavy traffic or a noisy restaurant. At this level, around 8 hours can cause harm. Every 3 dB increase doubles the sound energy, quickly reducing safe exposure time.

  • Ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus) after a show
  • Muffled hearing that takes hours to clear
  • Needing people to repeat themselves
  • Trouble following conversation in noisy rooms
  • New sensitivity to everyday sounds

During the show: put in protection right away if you aren't wearing it — and if symptoms worsen (real hearing loss, distorted sound), step away or leave. No set is worth permanent tinnitus.

After the show: give your ears 24-48 hours of real rest — no clubs, no loud bars, no headphones either. If ringing hasn't cleared in 48-72 hours, see a doctor.
