Live Music and Hearing Protection: What You Need to Know
That ringing in your ears after a show isn’t a badge of a good night: it’s a warning. Hearing damage from live music is cumulative, invisible, and irreversible.
The good news? You don’t have to sacrifice the sound or experience to protect your ears. With the right protection, you can enjoy loud music while caring for your hearing.
Louder Than You Think
Live music events mean long days of loud sets, and it's easy to lose track of just how loud those sets really are.
Hearing damage can begin around 85 dB — roughly the level of heavy traffic or a noisy restaurant. At this level, around 8 hours can cause harm. Every 3 dB increase doubles the sound energy, quickly reducing safe exposure time.
- 85 dB → 8 hours
- 88 dB → 4 hours
- 91 dB → 2 hours
- 94 dB → 1 hour
- 100 dB → 15 minutes
- 110–120 dB → just a few minutes
Live music can often reach 100–110 dB, meaning harmful exposure can happen before you even realise it.

The Invisible Damage
Ringing, Buzzing, or Muffled Hearing After a Show? It Isn't Normal.
These symptoms mean the delicate cells and neural pathways in your inner ear have been overstressed. Unlike most tissue in your body, these cells don’t regenerate once damaged.
Think of it like a bucket slowly filling with water. Every loud show adds more stress. At first, the ringing fades within hours or days, making it easy to dismiss — but the damage can accumulate.
Eventually, the bucket can overflow, and symptoms may become permanent, even when your ears seemed to “recover” between shows.

These earplugs work perfectly for concerts and parties. They reduce the volume just enough to protect my hearing without affecting the music. The sound stays clear and enjoyable...
"Why Alpine Tune?
The instinct to reach for foam earplugs, tissue, or cotton wool is understandable — but they can distort sound and don’t provide effective protection.
Alpine Tune earplugs are built specifically for concerts, festivals, and club nights, featuring:
- Advanced music filter (SNR 19 dB): Reduces volume evenly across all frequencies while preserving music clarity
- Conversation-friendly: Keeps conversations effortless
- Reusable: Wash with lukewarm water and let dry completely before storing
- Perfect fit: Available in 4 sizes (XS-L)

Notice the Warning Signs
Pay attention to:
- Ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus) after a show
- Muffled hearing that takes hours to clear
- Needing people to repeat themselves
- Trouble following conversation in noisy rooms
- New sensitivity to everyday sounds
During the show: put in protection right away if you aren't wearing it — and if symptoms worsen (real hearing loss, distorted sound), step away or leave. No set is worth permanent tinnitus.
After the show: give your ears 24-48 hours of real rest — no clubs, no loud bars, no headphones either. If ringing hasn't cleared in 48-72 hours, see a doctor.

Small Habits, Big Difference
A few tips to help protect your hearing and prevent damage:
- Keep some distance from the stage or speakers — a few extra meters meaningfully cuts your exposure
- Take breaks: step into a quieter zone (food court, chill-out area) for at least 30 minutes during long days
- Rest after: 24-48 hours away from loud environments and headphones lets your ears actually recover
